Actor as Matsuomaru

Series; Four Famous Wise Men of the Theater, 1894

Actor as Matsuomaru - Fantastic portrait from a series depicting the leading characters in the kabuki play "Sugawara denju tenarai kagami," a story based on the life of the exiled scholar and poet Sugawara Michizane. These incredible large-head or okubi-e portraits are beautifully detailed with fine line work and delicate embossing. This actor portrays Matsuomaru, one of the triplets in the play, named for the sturdy pine tree or matsu, featured as a design on his under robe. He wears a distinctive flared black wig and red makeup, giving him a fearsome appearance. Beautifully detailed with cloth embossing in the pink and white robe, burnishing in the hair and court cap, and embossing in the white cord. A wonderful, bold portrait from a rarely seen series by Kunichika.
