Hidari Jingoro and the Doll, 1856 - Fine Toyokuni III design of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Hidari Jingoro and Onoe Kikugoro IV as the doll in a kabuki play commonly known as "Kyo Ningyo." Hidari Jingoro was a skilled carpenter and sculptor who had fallen in love with a lovely courtesan from the Kyoto pleasure quarters. He carved a beautiful doll that looked like the beauty, and when he drank sake while admiring it, it began to move. Here, he playfully offers a cup of sake to his creation, which has come to life. A red lacquer tray holds other refreshments in blue and white porcelain bowls. The still-life above is by Gengyo Miyagi. A terrific image from this legendary tale, nicely detailed.
