Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Benten Kozo Kikunosuke, 1862

Comments - Dramatic and rather gory kabuki scene of Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as the thief Benten Kozo Kikunosuke, committing suicide on the rooftop of the Gokuraku Temple in Kyoto. Surrounded by police, he decides to kill himself to atone for his crimes. He leans heavily on a pole arm for support, bleeding profusely from the wound to his belly, his face shaded with blue as a sign of his impending death. The tile roof curves upwards behind him, adorned with a fish ornament at left with glowing yellow eyes. An expressive portrait.
