Comments - Fascinating scene of puppeteers performing a scene from a play in a style of acting called "ningyoburi," which imitates the exaggerated motions of puppets. Stage assistants dressed from head to toe in black act as puppeteers, giving the illusion of manipulating the performers. In the center, a beauty strikes a pose with her hands stiffly extended, looking back over her shoulder at a man in a window, who is also acting as a puppet. She wears a striking kimono patterned with tie-dyed bands of red, green, and blue, over a red under robe. An interesting and unusual subject, detailed with extensive burnishing in the black robes.
