Series; Chushingura

47 Ronin, Act 3, circa 1829 - Handsome illustration from Act 3 of the famous kabuki play based on the 47 ronin, the "Kanadehon Chushingura." Here, the samurai Kampei, decides to elope with his sweetheart, the beauty Okaru, after having been to late to save his master, Lord Hangan, from quarreling with Lord Moronao. They are shown at the rear gate of the castle, pausing at the foot of the bridge as a guard dances up and down excitedly in the entrance at right. Okaru clasps her hands together with a worried expression as Kampei frowns at her. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.
