Comments - Fantastic three-panel woodblock depicting the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The young brothers have waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who has accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. Sogo Juro battles with Yoritomo's retainer Nitta Shiro Tadatsune, gripping a sword above his head with both hands, his kimono tucked up at the waist and sleeves tied back. He focuses intently on his opponent, his face contorted in a grimace, who keeps him at bay by thrusting a naginata at him. The driving rain is relentless, pouring down in straight lines in the stormy gray night, with wounded and dead samurai littering the ground. An incredible depiction of the moments before these brave warriors will finally avenge their father's death. A great scene from this legendary tale of honor and heroism, with a wonderful atmospheric setting. An incredible choice for a serious Kuniyoshi collector or samurai enthusiast.
