Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the ghost of Akugenta (Wicked Genta) Yoshihira appearing to wreak vengeance on his killer. During the Genpei War between the Taira and the Minamoto clans, the fierce young warrior Minamoto no Yoshihira was captured in Kyoto by the Taira. Namba no Jiro took the captive to Nunobiki Waterfall, where he executed him. Immediately after his death, Yoshihira’s ghost sprang up into the air, generating a powerful thunderstorm with lightening that struck his executioner dead. Here, the angry spirit appears in mass of red flames and swirling clouds, grabbing Namba no Jiro by the scruff of his neck. Jagged bolts of lightening streak across the landscape, with an explosion sending out rays of light below. At left, Taira no Kiyomori looks up with an angry grimace as gusts of wind tatter the umbrella carried by his page. At right, a Taira samurai grips his sword with both hands, ready to do battle with the malevolent ghost. An incredible illustration of this legendary supernatural tale. An amazing subject for the discerning collector.
