The Six Jewel-like Faces of Actors, circa 1832 - 1833

The Kinuta Jewel River in Settsu Province: Nakamura Utaemon IV - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Utaemon IV in front of a view of the Kinuta (or Cloth Fulling) Jewel River in Settsu Province. He lifts the hem of his black and white print summer kimono with both hands as he looks back over his shoulder with a scowl, the breeze blowing his robes about him. He has a towel draped over one shoulder, and a folding fan tucked at the back of his neck. The landscape above is done only in shades of blue, a technique known as aizuri-e. Two women can be seen at lower right pounding cloth on a fulling block, a process that entangles the fibers to create a stronger fabric, a thatch-roof farmhouse behind the. The river winds across the scene at left, with mountains in the distance. An intriguing and rare design, beautifully colored and detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
