Soga Brothers Attacking Suketsune, 1895

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the Soga Brothers attacking Suketsune, the man who murdered their father when they were young boys. At left, Goro holds his sword held high over his head, ready to strike as the surprised victim reaches for his sword. In the center, Juro rushes to his brother's aid, drawing his sword as he sneaks up behind Suketsune. The scene takes place in a temporary hunting camp, a lantern providing light behind them and drapery from the tent seen overhead. The beauty Oiso Tora watches from the right, shielding her lamp with her kimono sleeve. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Onoe Kikugoro V, and Nakamura Fukusuke IV. A dramatic moment from this famous tale of honor and revenge. A great composition with lively color and detail.
