Meeting at a Garden Gate, 1863

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a young man meeting with an older fellow at a garden gate. He holds a bag of money in his outstretched hand, looking up with a questioning expression, his eyes wide. The fellow at right leans over the top of the gate with a worried frown, wearing a boldly patterned geometric print kimono, a cloth wrapped about his head. At left, a beauty tilts her head as she listens, watching the pair out of the corner of her eyes. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III as Ominaeshi-hime, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Ono no Yorikaze, and Bando Hikosaburo V as Ono no Michikaze. Nice large expressive figures detailed with fine line work in the hair, and soft bokashi shading in the night sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
