Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Wrestling Match between Koyonagi and Kuroiwa, circa 1850

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting a sumo wrestling match between Koyonagi, at left, and Kuroiwa, at right. The athletes face off in the middle of the ring as Koyonagi places his hand on his opponent's back and Kuroiwa grabs his foe's arm, each leaning forward. At left, the referee Kimura Shonosuke watches closing, holding his fan, while the elderly patron Ikazuchi sits on a cushion at right. A dramatic composition with the large figures dominating the scene. A great subject for a collector interested in this ancient sport.
