New Play at the Kabukiza: Sekigahara, 1892

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a drama about the Battle of Sekigahara. In the center, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, frowns unhappily at a young samurai. He grips a naginata in one hand, his graying hair pulled back into a slender topknot tied with yellow court. The samurai sits with his hands on his lap, grimacing angrily. He wears a gray dotted kamishimo with the vest pushed down to the waist, over a black kimono with a burnished geometric pattern. A beauty watches quietly at right, a fan in her lap. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Nakamura Fukusuke IV. A handsome design with expressive figures and fine line work in the hair.
