Enemies Meeting in the Yoshiwara, 1851

Comments - Handsome scene from the popular kabuki play commonly known as "Sanza Rotaku." Entrusted by his lord with the care of a precious scroll, Nagoya Sanza was banished from his clan after the scroll was stolen by the evil Fuwa Banzaemon, who appears at right dressed in a black robe with a bold design of clouds and red lightning bolts with plaid insets. The pair accidentally meets while brushing past each other in the Yoshiwara one night. Sanza stands at left, eying his enemy with surprise as he lifts his woven hat for a better view, wearing a tan and green kimono patterned swallows and water. Lanterns rise above the low garden fence behind them, and white cherry blossoms frame the evening sky overhead, creating a striking backdrop for the pair. Ichikawa Ebizo V appears as Fuwa Banzaemon. Nicely detailed and colored with fine bokashi shading in the background.
