The Eight Dog of Satomi: On Top of Horyukaku, 1854

Comments - Incredible triptych of the samurai Inuzuka Shino battling Inukai Kempachi and his men on the roof of the Horyukaku, a tower of Koga Castle. This scene illustrates a popular episode from the Edo era novel "Tale of the Eight Dog Warriors of Satomi." Backed against a large fish ornament, Inuzuka Shino fights valiantly, sending his opponents tumbling through the air and sliding down the tiled rooftop. An enemy climbs over the roof below him, a truncheon clenched between his teeth, as a cloud of frightened birds takes wing. A fantastic, dramatic composition with excellent architectural detail and great expressive faces. A terrific subject for a samurai enthusiast.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. A few creases, slight rippling at top edge. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
