Oniwaka Maru Killing a Giant Carp

Comments - Terrific Kuniyoshi design from the tale of Oniwaka Maru (the future Benkei) and the giant carp. While studying at a temple, Oniwaka Maru learned that a giant carp had eaten his mother when she fell into a pool at the foot of Bishamon Waterfall. He immediately left his studies and hunted down and killed the monster to avenge her death. Here, he wrestles the giant fish out of the water, waves splashing all around him as he raises his knife high. A dramatic composition filled with movement and a great illustration from this legendary story.

Exceptionally Fine Meiji Reprint - This beautiful full oban reprint of this Kuniyoshi masterwork subject is especially finely printed using original natural inks and fine mulberry bark paper. The result is an incredible old reprint that is very close to the original in look and feel. Kuniyoshi's original first edition printing of this design in similarly pristine condition sells in excess of $10,000. Take advantage of this opportunity to purchase this fine old reprint.
