Lucky God Hotei and Children

6 mm Watanabe Reprint - This beautiful woodblock was published by the Watanabe Company and bears the important Watanabe round 6 mm seal. These old Watanabe prints are some of the finest woodblock reprints ever done. Watanabe began using the 6 mm seal after World War II ended, and it was in use from 1946 to 1957. These terrific Watanabe reprints are a wonderful way to collect a masterwork from the Edo era at an affordable price.

Comments - Charming scene of Hotei, one of Japan's famous Seven Lucky Gods, in the mountains with children collecting treasures for the New Year. An excited child takes him by the hand as he crawls across a narrow stone bridge, the boy gesturing at a money tree covered with gold coins at right. The child at left carries a yoke loaded with precious items, including coral, while his companion watches from the other side of the gorge, holding a walking stick with a fan tied to it. An attractive subject, nicely colored and detailed.

Artist - Kuniteru I (1808 - 1876)
