The Battle of Ishibashiyama, 1882

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the great leader Minamoto no Yoritomo and a few of his men hiding in a hollow tree following his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama. Surrounded by enemy forces, his spy among the Taira, Kajiwara Kagetoki, crouches atop the enormous tree trunk, poking his bow through an opening in an attempt to divert Yoritomo's pursuers away from the hiding place. At left, the Taira commander Oba Kagechika leans forward, gesturing at the tree, a naginata in his other hand. Two startled birds fly up from the foliage at bottom center, and a tree frames the view at left. A great design from this famous tale, nicely detailed with a striking natural setting.

Artist - Toshinobu (1857 - 1886)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown
