Series; Outer Chiyoda Palace (Chiyoda no on-omote)
Imperial Procession at Ueno - Fantastic six-panel woodblock presenting a panoramic view of a feudal procession at Ueno. A terrific image showing samurai marching solemnly past a low hill framed by pine and willow trees with two temple structures on top. At far left, two retainers lead a white horse draped in red, its mane beautifully braided. They are followed by men carrying large woven crates emblazoned with the hollyhock leaf mon or crest of the Tokugawa family. At the rear at nobleman rides in a black lacquer palanquin. Incredible detail in the clothing and expressions, with soft shading in the background and touches of burnishing. A wonderful choice for collectors interested in traditional activities during the Shogun's reign.
