Naval Officer Kajiwara Fumio Wounded during the Fierce Naval Battle at Port Arthur, 1904

Series; Reports on the Russo-Japanese War

Naval Officer Kajiwara Fumio Wounded during the Fierce Naval Battle at Port Arthur, 1904 - Fascinating illustration depicting Japanese medics providing assistance to officer Kajiwara Fumio, who was wounded during the naval battle of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War. Despite blood dripping from his wounds and soaking through the stretcher, he directs another officer's attention to the fallen sailor at left, who is being tended by two men. Behind them at right, a sailor wheels a dolly carrying a large shell along tracks toward the guns as clouds of smoke drift across the ship. Jagged pieces of steel protrude overhead, and the deck at left is splintered, evidence of a direct hit to the Japanese vessel. An unusual onboard scene from this famous conflict, rendered with touches of burnishing and fine bokashi shading.

Special Commemorative Seal - Each panel of this triptych bears a postal stamp with an ink seal reading "Naval Commemoration Day of the War, 1904 - 1905" in English along with Japanese text. In Japan, Navy Anniversary Day was celebrated on May 27 from 1906 until 1945 in honor of the Battle of Tsushima, the decisive Japanese naval victory over the Russians during the Russo-Japanese War. The date on the seal is "39-5-27," which corresponds to May 27, 1906 (the 39th year of the Meiji era). These seals are often seen on commemorative postcards, but rarely are affixed to woodblock prints depicting actual engagements from the war. A fascinating historic subject, and a terrific addition to any Russo-Japanese War or military collection.
