Couple and Visitor, 1859

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Izayoi Seishin." Kneeling at left, the nun Izayoi, who had been kidnapped but was rescued by the bandit Seikichi, has taken the name Osayo and decided to give up the religious life. At right, Seikichi, whose nickname is "Onizami" or "Demon Thistle," scratches his head in a worried manner as he looks up at his visitor, who clutches a baby to his chest under his robe. The man grimaces unhappily as he looks to the side, eyeing an ancestor tablet on the table at right. The home is rather shabby, with cracks and a large hole in the wall at left. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo, Asao Yoroku II, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. Nice expressive figure in a finely detailed setting.
