Couple under Moonlight, 1859

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a young couple on a moonlit night. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro and Iwai Kumesaburo as the geisha Ohana. The beauty smiles as she bites the edge of a blue and white cloth stretched between her hands, looking happily at her companion. He stares up at her with a concerned frown, his eyes wide as he pushes up his sleeve. Colorful ornate lanterns hang overhead, decorated with hanging cloth panels featuring flowers in gray silhouette and trimmed with fringe. A full moon glows in the night sky, and musicians and chanters perform on a platform behind the actors. An attractive design.
