Original Katsushika Taito II (active circa 1820 - 1850) Japanese Woodblock Print
Mandarin Ducks in Snow

Series; Sketchbook of Flowers and Birds, 1849

Sketchbook of Flowers and Birds - Published in 1849 in two volumes, Katsushika Taito II's "Sketchbook of Flowers and Birds," features beautiful illustrations of birds and flowers throughout the seasons. These charming designs are drawn with lively calligraphic line work, much like traditional sumi ink paintings. A student of Hokusai, Taito II captures birds in flight or perched on flowering branches, taking refuge in snow-covered trees or searching for a meal. These attractive scenes are simply rendered in beautiful tones of soft gray and black, accented with touches of a pale pinkish shade.

This set - This set includes a rare original ink sketch by the artist along with the final printed woodblock, each mounted to a separate backing sheet. Original sketches for woodblock prints are rarely seen in the market. Don't miss this great opportunity to purchase a classic Edo era example of kacho-e along with a rare preparatory sketch.

Artist - Katsushika Taito II (active circa 1820 - 1850)

Image Size - Image 6" x 8 1/4"; backing sheet 11 3/4" x 14"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Set includes two diptychs (one print, one sketch), attached at the seams, mounted at top corners to separate backing sheets. Slight creasing, very slight soiling. Pencil notation in French on backing sheet. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
