The Soga Brothers Entering Yoritomo's Hunting Camp, 1851

Comments - Handsome scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers. Here, the two young samurai have entered the hunting camp of Shogun Yoritomo in search of their enemy, Lord Suketsune, who killed their father many years ago. At left, the beauty Shosho, the sweetheart of Soga Goro Tokimune, shows them the way to Suketsune's lodging. She smiles sweetly as she looks over her shoulder, holding up her robe as she walks. Behind her, Goro leads forward holding a flaming torch high, his straw raincoat fluttering in the wind as raindrops slant across the sky. At right, Soga Juro Sukenari pauses to lift his hat high, staring ahead cautiously. Behind them, cloth tent walls patterned with Suketsune's crest flap in the breeze above a wooden fence. The actors include Bando Shuka I as Tegoshi no Shosho, and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Soga no Goro Tokimune. A great image of these brave young warriors about to achieve revenge.
