New Play at the Kabukiza: The Soga Brothers

Comments - Handsome scene from one of the many plays about the Soga Brothers, who pledged to avenge the death of their father. Here, the two brothers confront Kudo Suketsune, their father's murderer. At left, Soga Juro scowls angrily as he stares at Suketsune, who sits at right playing a hand drum on his shoulder. Sogo Goro dances in the center, waving a folding fan and looking defiantly up at his enemy. The beauty Tora Gozen sits at far right, the red folding screen behind her patterned with blossoming irises. Mt. Fuji rises in the distance at left against a dramatic red sky. The actors include Onoe Kikugoro as Soga Juro, Ichikawa Sadanji as Soga Goro, Ichikawa Danjuro as Kudo Suketsune, and Nakamura Fukusuke as Tora Gozen. An interesting illustration from this classic drama.
