Samurai and Princess, 1884

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the premiere of the drama "Chujo Hime Taima Engi" at the Harukiza Theater. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Teruzo I as Kunioka Shogen, Fujikawa Tomokichi V as his wife, Oshina, Ichikawa Kuzo III as the evil Lady Teruhi-no-Mae, and Suketakaya Takasuke IV as Princess Chujo. Kunioka Shogen stands at left, frowning soberly as he grips his sword. His wife kneels beside him, watching him closely. At right, Princess Chujo looks up with a suspicious expression, throwing out her hand in alarm. The evil Lady Teruhi-no-Mae waits in the center, grimacing at the young beauty. A standing screen in the center of the robe is patterned with pine trees, while the panels at the back of the room feature a landscape view with a blossoming cherry tree, a black lacquer border framing a doorway at right. Nice large figures with fine line work in the hair and lively color.
