Taira Warrior in Disguise, 1893

Comments - Lively kabuki scene from the drama "Oatsurae Homare no Suehiro," a tale about the young warrior Taira no Atsumori hiding out at a fan shop after the defeat of the Heike by the Genji Clan. Disguised as the young beauty Kohagi, a shop assistant, he stands at left wearing a lavender kimono patterned with blossoms and flowing water. In the center, the suspicious Genji commander Kumagai Jiro Naozane scowls angrily as he stares at Kohagi, lifting his woven hat for a better look. Two startled men tumble backwards, while a beauty clutching a child to her chest watches solemnly at right. The actors include Ichikawa Yonezo 4.5 as Kohagi and Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kumagai Jiro Naozane. An interesting subject with expressive figures and vibrant color.
