Presentation of the Emperor's Gift Cup for the Second Time to Commanders Involved in Pacifying Western Japan, 1877

Comments - Intriguing scene of a ceremony presenting cups of sake as a gift from the emperor to the Imperial Army commanders who conquered the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. Five officers sit in wooden chairs along the front of the room as beauties pour sake from long-handled servers into large red lacquer cups. The man at left tilts his head back as he drinks from the enormous cup, while at right, a fellow's face is almost completely hidden as he drains the last drops from his cup. A cloth covered table in the center of the room holds a large tray piled with sweets, with stern-faced officers looking on from around the edges of the room. Outside the palace at right, rows of soldiers stand at attention. An intriguing image, detailed with embossing in the white kimono and burnishing in some of the black uniforms.

Image Size - 29 3/4" x 14" + margins as shown
