Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Actor and Puppeteer, 1864

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of an actor in the role of a maid striking an unusual pose. The scene depicts "ningyoburi," a style of acting imitating the exaggerated motions of puppets. An assistant dressed from head to toe in black with a veiled face acts as a puppeteer, giving the illusion of manipulating the performer. She balances one foot as if running, her arms swung stiffly to the side, an unhappy expression on her face. Her blue kimono is patterned with flowers and worn over a red under robe and leggings. Colorful maple branches frame the night sky above. An intriguing subject.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. Some staining and toning. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some light soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
