Warriors in the Snow

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting three warriors in the snow. At right, Kawarazaki Sansho appears as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, gripping his sword over his shoulder with both hands. He wears a fine suit of armor over a blue brocade robe trimmed with tassels, and a striking horned battle helmet topped with a dragon. The samurai in the center holds a naginata, frowning over his shoulder at Yoshitsune. His short hair sticks up atop his head, with longer longs hanging on either side of his neck. At left, a warrior in a straw raincoat lifts his hat, scattered clumps of snow over his back. A great design with large, colorful figures, set against a lake surrounded by snowy mountains. Includes a spattering of white pigment as snow in the left panel, and black pigment in the center and right panel.
