Yoshida Chuzaemon Kanesuke, circa 1843 - 1846

Comments - Fantastic vertical diptych or kakemono portrait of Yoshida Chuzaemon Kanesuke, one of the famous 47 ronin. A trusted retainer experienced in warfare, Yuranosuke appointed him commander of the troops for the plot to avenge Lord Hangan's death. He is shown here sitting on a folding stool, a brush and portable writing set in hand, a roll of paper in his lap. He looks ahead with a solemn, thoughtful expression as he composes a poem, for he was also known for his skill in verse. He wears the traditional black and white robe associated with the ronin, his two swords tucked at his side and battle helmet hanging over his back. A wonderfully expressive figure, with beautiful color and detail in the clothing. A rare Kuniyoshi 47 ronin kakemono.
