An early Meiji Tokaido release - This print is from an early Meiji re-release of Hiroshige’s Hoeido Tokaido series that was commissioned through the Meiji era Matsuda Publishing House of Tokyo. The publisher produced a new set of blocks for the entire Hoeido Tokaido and released a stunning set of Tokaido prints that is virtually indistinguishable from the originals.

These prints differ greatly from more commonly seen reprints in that the paper, often used as a first indicator of authenticity, is identical to the original paper used in the Hoeido Tokaido. The inks used were also natural dyes imitating the original Hoeido release. This series is so well done, and as the prints are close in age to the original release, they are sometimes confused with original Hoeido Tokaido prints. However, they are a rare early reprint set and a nice opportunity to collect beautifully printed Tokaido at a fraction of the cost of original Hoeido Tokaido prints. The Rokugo Ferry at Kawasaki, Second State - A peaceful river scene with a ferry and six passengers who are casually engaged in puffing a pipe or conversing. The ferry moves from the far shore where a group of travelers with a horse and palanquin wait for its return. This second state version eliminates a man on a raft, and omits the peak of Mt. Fuji at right in the first state. Fantastic, classic Tokaido print. This second state is rarely seen in reprint form.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Some prints have a couple small holes, repaired from reverse. Slight soiling, a few small spots. Please see photos for details. Very nice overall.
