Series; Biographies of Famous Women, Ancient and Modern
Biographies of Famous Women, Ancient and Modern - Handsome design from Toyokuni III's series "Biographies of Famous Women, Ancient and Modern" (Kokin meifu den), originally designed around the early 1860s. Each print features a renowned Japanese woman, from historical figures such as the poets Ono no Komachi and Sei Shonagon, to legendary women like the warrior Tomoe Gozen and Princess Matsu-ura Sayohime, who turned to stone while waiting for her husband to return from Korea.
Beautifully carved and printed, these reprints come from a 1918 edition published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan. Each features a portrait and a separate text page with a story about the figure.
