Gentoku Visits Komei in the Snow, 1883

Comments - Terrific Yoshitoshi design illustrating a scene from the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a historical novel written about the three warring kingdoms in 3rd century China. Here the three great leaders Gentoku, Kwanu, and Chohi pay a visit to Komei's house in winter. They wait outside in the falling snow, a young boy meeting them at the garden gate. The warriors wear snow-covered straw coats over their fine robes, one man's woven hat caught by the wind. Through the round window, Komei can be seen sitting calmly reading a book at a table inside the snug home. A wonderful winter landscape setting with delicate embossed detail on Komei's white fur wrap.
