Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Street Knight and Courtesan, 1897

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as a sad looking otokodate or street knight, strolling through the Yoshiwara in a light rain. He carries an umbrella against the slanting raindrops, a few petals falling from the blossoming cherry tree in the fenced garden bed at left. He turns his head, a slight frown on his face. The circular inset at upper right features Nakamura Fukusuke as the beautiful courtesan Katsuragi, smiling as she plays the shamisen. She wears a purple kimono over a red under robe, tied with a shaded pink obi, her hair adorned with a comb and many hairpins. A handsome design with large expressive figures, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black kimono, and embossing in the white kimono collar.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 28 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, attached at the seams, backed with paper. A couple small tears at edges, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing in right panel, faint staining at right corners. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
