Soga Brothers Confronting Suketsune, 1893

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers, whose father was killed by the nobleman Suketsune when they were very young children. Here, the brothers confront Suketsune at Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The impetuous younger brother Soga Goro leaps to his feet, his hands out as he reaches for the villain. The older Soga Juro urges him to remain calm, holding his hand out to stop Goro from reaching their enemy. A beauty watches calmly from the right, standing under a pine tree strung with cloth tent walls. The majestic snow-covered peak of Fuji rises at left, dominating the skyline. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I as Soga Goro, Onoe Kikugoro V as Soga Juro, Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kudo Suketsune, and Onoe Eizaburo V as Kamekiku. A handsome design from this timeless story of honor and revenge.
