Audience with Minamoto no Yoritomo, 1843 - 1846

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting an audience with Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate. He stands on a platform at center, dressed in elegant robes and a yellow court cap, his sword bearer at his side. A group of noblemen gathered around him bows respectfully, while additional samurai are seated in the room below wearing formal court attire. In the center of the room, an offering tray holds a sake cup and a long-handled sake server rests on the floor nearby. The men exchange angry glances, with a nobleman in a red vest at left gesturing accusingly with his fan. Draperies featuring the paulownia crest of the Minamoto Clan frame the room, with warriors in armor sitting in outer rooms on either side of the main hall. An intriguing subject with expressive faces and fine detail, each figure carefully identified with a yellow name cartouche.
