Ushiwakamaru Serenading Joruri-hime , 1843 - 1845

Comments - Lovely spring scene of young samurai Ushiwakamaru, later known as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, serenading the Princess Joruri with his flute. According to the story, Ushiwakamaru came across her home while traveling, and became entranced by the beautiful young maiden, and the pair fell in love. Here, he stands outside the garden gate playing his flute, a sword bearer kneeling at his side. A young attendant approaches the gate with a lantern in hand. The princess can be seen inside the palace, playing the koto in a room overlooking the pond. A full moon glows high overhead, and blossoming cherry trees and pines frame the view. A charming design with wonderful detail and color, and an attractive setting.
