Kajiwara Kagetoki Joins Minamoto no Yoritomo to Attack the Taira, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene of the warrior Kajiwara Kagetoki at the Battle of Ishibashiyama. Kagetoki had initially served the Taira during the Genpei War, but according to legend, after Minamoto no Yoritomo lost to the Taira at Ishibashiyama, he discovered him hiding in a hollow tree and diverted attention so that he was not found. Here, Kagetoki stands atop the hollow tree at left, his bow in hand. Yoritomo and his men are concealed within the trunk, their heads visible in the hollow. At right, the commander of the Taira, Oba Kagechika sits atop a black horse, gesturing towards Kagetoki. Fighting continues on the shore behind them, with a Minamoto warrior on a dappled horse charging the enemy with his sword held high. A pine tree frames a view of the sea with a few birds fluttering across the sky, and a waterfall rushes over the rocky cliff at left. A handsome illustration of this legendary incident.
