Upstairs at a Teahouse, 1853

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of two beauties upstairs at a teahouse. The seated woman at right laughs and points, holding her kimono sleeve to her chin. The young courtesan behind her smiles in amusement, her hand to her mouth, wearing a striped kimono tied with a red tie-dyed obi that reverses to a blue print. A matron climbing the stairs at left reacts with a horrified expression, her mouth agape. Nice expressive faces with fine detail in the architectural setting.

Image Size - 14" x 9 5/8" + top margin as shown
