Unhappy Young Sumo Wrestler

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the young sumo wrestler Hanaregoma Chokichi preparing to break a ceramic cup after learning that his fellow wrestler Chogoro purposely lost a match to him as a favor to his patron. He frowns unhappily as he raises the cup in his hand, ready to throw it to the ground in anger, looking somewhat like a pouting child. He lifts one edge of his kimono, revealing a ceremonial fringed apron, a tobacco pouch and pipe case hanging at his waist. The straw matting and bamboo frame of the temporary arena for the wrestling matches can be seen at upper left. A great expressive figure with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 14 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. A couple small holes repaired. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
