Lord Yoritomo's Hunt at Mount Fuji, 1859

Comments - Terrific illustration of the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo's famous hunt that took place at the foot of Mt. Fuji in 1193. Archers race across the plains on horseback, firing at deer, rabbits, bears, and foxes. Samurai on foot beat bamboo brooms to flush the game across the field, driving the animals into an area enclosed by cloth tent walls. In the foreground, the warrior Tadatsune straddles an enormous wild boar, ready to kill it with his knife. Wounded by several arrows, the enraged animal snarls and leaps, knocking over a few men on the ground. The shogun and his court watch the proceedings from an elaborate pavilion atop a low hill. A colorful view of this historic event, with wonderful detail and a handsome natural setting.
