Tawara Toda Defeating the Centipede, 1850 - 1851

Comments - Fantastic scene of Tawara Toda (Fujiwara no Hidesato) rescuing the Dragon Princess from an enormous centipede that had menaced her father, the Dragon King, and his domain. The famous archer bravely faced the monster at Seta Bridge. He is shown here standing atop the bridge with his bow and arrows in hand, scowling up at the hideous monster, which wraps about the pine trees of Mt. Mikami at upper left. The princess kneels in the center wearing layers of beautiful kimono, her long hair falling over her back and reaching to the hem of her robe. The Dragon King appears in the water at left. A terrific Edo illustration of this popular tale, wonderfully detailed.
