Scene from the 47 Ronin, 1851

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic drama about the 47 ronin. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I as Koshimoto Okaru, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Shikama Takubei, and Fujikawa Kayo III as the Kaoyo, Lord Hangan's widow. The beautiful Lady Kaoyo leans forward with an eager smile as Takubei kneels in the garden, his arms thrown up by his head in an alarmed gesture. Okaru smiles as she looks back over her shoulder, holding an elegant lacquer box in her hand. She wears a blue kimono patterned with blossoms and tied with a lighter blue brocade obi. A stone lantern stands next to a water basin, enclosed with a bamboo garden fence. An interesting subject with a nicely detailed setting, attractively colored.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 30"

Condition - This triptych with excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels not attached at the seams. A bit of soiling and rubbing. A few small holes in right panel, repaired from reverse. See photos. Nice overall.
