Original Toshikata (1866 - 1908) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Courtesan Jigokudayu and Priest Ikkyu, 1899

Comments - Handsome, large format print depicting the courtesan Jigokudayu and the priest Ikkyu. Known for carrying a staff topped with a skull to remind New Year's Day revelers of the inevitability of death, Ikkyu enlightened the young courtesan as to the evils of her profession, and she became a convert to religious life. The wizened old man sits on a stool with his staff, wearing a monk's mantle over a gray robe and straw sandals. The beauty is elegantly regal, wearing a kimono patterned with an intricate scene of hell, complete with demons and flames, over a red checked under robe. She carries a fly whisk and smiles as she looks down at her companion. A great illustration from this famous tale, in an unusual large format.

Artist - Toshikata (1866 - 1908)

Image Size - 20 1/2" x 13 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Horizontal and vertical fold lines. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Creasing, slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
