Dojoji by Gekko (1859 - 1920)

Original Gekko (1859 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Dojoji

Series; Flowers of Japan

Flowers of Japan - Gekko's "Flowers of Japan" series features a variety of subjects beyond flowers, including historical figures and events, and pastimes or daily activities. These charming designs are rendered in Gekko's painterly style, which includes attractive calligraphic line work with a loose, sketch-like quality. Prints were published between 1892 and 1900, and many subjects include deluxe publishing techniques such as burnishing, embossing, or mica. These attractive Meiji era designs are a nice choice to collect or display.

Dojoji - Handsome illustration of a scene from the Noh play "Dojoji." A female dancer comes to Dojoji Temple hoping to dance before the new temple bell. No women have been allowed at the temple since the death of the monk Anchin at the hands of the beauty Kiyohime. Unaware that the beauty is actually the spirit of Kiyohime, the monks allow her to perform, and are soon overcome with strange sensations. Here, she approaches the bell, a folding fan in hand, wearing a colorful red robe over a black kimono and a tall black court cap. A pine tree in muted colors fills the background. A great design from this classic drama.
