The House of Kinpeiro in the New Yoshiwara, 1871

Comments - Terrific triptych showing courtesans enjoying a moment of leisure at the Kinpeiro House in the New Yoshiwara, entertaining themselves with music. In the center a beauty plays the koto, a songbook spread out on the carpet before her, while a woman at right strums a shamisen. The beauty kneeling at left plays a kokyu, a small instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. The other women smile happily as they enjoy the music. Cherry trees bloom outside the modern glass windows, and cherry branches are arranged in a vase in a scroll niche at far left. Wonderful detail in the interior furnishings and colorful fabrics, with delicate embossing on the white kimono collars. A charming scene.

Image Size - 28 1/4" x 14"
