Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sawamura Tanosuke III as Danshichi's Wife Okaji, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke III as Okaji, the wife of the street knight Danshichi in the play commonly known as "Natsu Matsuri." Here, she kneels in an interior, smiling sweetly as she looks over her shoulder while tying a black obi around her waist. She wears a striped kimono over a red under robe, her hair arranged in a smooth knot adorned with a comb and a few simple ornaments. A low folding screen can be seen at right in front of a shoji panel. Nicely composed with an attractively detailed setting.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
