Meiji era Original Japanese Painting on Paper
Benkei Fighting Ushiwakamaru Painted Fan

Comments - Attractive original fan painted with a design of the warrior monk Benkei fighting the young Ushiwakamaru (the future Yoshitsune). Benkei thrusts his naginata forward as Ushiwakamaru leaps high in the air, his sword in one hand and a fan in the other. Benkei has a monk's cowl wrapped about his head, and a small arsenal of weapons at his back. The figures are carefully painted on a metallic background. The reverse also features a painting of cranes against a metallic ground. An interesting and unusual item with a classic samurai subject.
