The Tsukiji Hotel, the First Western Style Hotel Built in Tokyo, and the Paddle Steamer City of Edo, 1870

Comments - Handsome view of the impressive modern Tsukiji Hotel in Tokyo as seen from the water. The Meiji Government constructed the Tsukiji Hotel in 1868 to house foreign visitors, covering it with terra cotta tiles in an effort to fireproof it, but it nevertheless burned down in 1872. The two story structure is surrounded by a fenced courtyard enclosing blossoming cherry trees, the building topped with a cupola and weather vane. In the foreground, the paddle steamer "City of Edo" makes its way along the waterfront, carrying many passengers, including Westerners. A bridge arches across a canal at left, with Mt. Fuji rising above low mountains in the distance. A fine historic image with wonderful detail and soft bokashi shading.

Artist - Hiroshige III (1843 - 1894)
