Shogun and Wife Watching Dancers

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting the shogun and his wife watching several men and women performing a nunozarashi dance using cloth streamers. The strips of cloth flow across the sky in graceful rippling folds, floating weightlessly in the air. The dancers are actually thieves. The shogun and his wife are elegantly dressed in sumptuous robes, the shogun holding a fan topped with a fly whisk, and his wife a ceremonial fan to indicate their status. Ichikawa Danjuro IX appears as the shogun, and Nakamura Fukusuke IV plays his wife. Nice expressive figures and lively color in this intriguing scene.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This triptych with excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, attached at the seams. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
